Same-Day Help for Sudden Eye Problems

Some eye problems can worsen quickly, even if they seem minor at first. If you’re unsure, it’s always appropriate to call. We’ll ask a few quick questions, help you understand the level of urgency, and tell you what to do next, whether that’s coming in the same day, monitoring symptoms, or seeking hospital care.

Immediate Assessment for Eye Emergencies

Contact our clinic as soon as possible if you have:

  • Sudden change in vision (blur, distortion, reduced vision, or a “curtain/shadow”)

  • Flashes of light, new floaters, or a sudden increase in floaters

  • Eye injury, foreign object, or anything that hit the eye

  • Chemical exposure

  • Eye pain (especially with headache, nausea, or light sensitivity)

  • Red eye with discharge, swelling, or worsening irritation

  • Contact lens discomfort that doesn’t settle after removing the lens

  • Any eye issue in a child that seems sudden or unusual

If symptoms are severe or worsening quickly, don’t wait to “see if it improves.”

What to Do Before You Arrive

A few steps can help protect your eye while you’re arranging care.

Avoid rubbing the eye or applying pressure after an injury. If chemicals are involved, rinse gently with clean water right away and seek urgent care. If you wear contact lenses, remove them and bring them with you if possible.

If you can, bring a list of medications and any relevant health history. It helps us move faster.

  • Sudden, significant vision loss

  • A serious injury or penetrating trauma

  • A chemical burn that isn’t improving with rinsing
